What made you decide to go to Arkansas Governor's School?
“I went to Governor’s School because I was actually told about is by my private instructor who teaches me on my trumpet. He told me it would be a great experience. I didn’t know what it was at first, but then he was telling me about how there were different sections like math, science, band, english, and all of the above. He said it would look really good on college resumes and that I would learn a lot from it, and I did.”
What did you particularly enjoy about AGS?
“What I really enjoyed about it was when we were there, there was not a lot of technological activity, because they [the resident assistants] wouldn’t let us use our phones. I think that really helped me focus on the world around me and help me learn a lot from the speakers that we had without that distraction there. I really enjoyed all of the things that we did, all the mixers were a lot of fun. Especially the glow mixer. I got to hang out with some people that thought very similarly to how I do, and other people that had different world views. I definitely enjoyed the area I chose, instrumental music, the best, but a close second was Area Three. How we would go over the ideas behind IQ and EQ, and ways to talk to people, figuring out how our emotions work. I think it is a good program no matter where it is, but I really enjoyed the Hendrix campus. I really liked how it wasn’t huge and how I didn’t have to think about an entire campus to find all my stuff, because Hendrix is so small that you can find things easily. It was a nice campus. The dorms were really nice too.”
I hear AGS is actually moving to a new campus under new leadership, do you think the program will be the same?
“Really I think the program will do well anywhere they put it.”
AGS was meant to be a place where you learned from your peers, how did it feel going to a completely new environment where you didn’t know anyone?
“It was kinda scary at first, I did know a few because I knew some people from other schools, but I wasn’t in my element, and I wasn’t with all my peers and everything. I had to reach out and talk to some people and see what other people liked. It really expanded my idea on how I think about things and the way people react and the way they are.”

The Hitlist
The Hitlist is a tool my staff uses as a way to manage the coverage of the people in our school. Our ideal goal is to cover everyone in our school at least three times, twice within our normal coverage and once within their portrait. The Hitlist is our way of keeping track of who and where students have been covered. After a student has been covered on a spread we mark the page in the Hitlist. Before someone can be covered in the book a staffer must check the Hitlist to see if said person has already been covered. If they have already been covered we ask that they cover someone else.

The Ladder
This year we decided to convert over from a traditional style book to a chronological style book. To guarantee that each group was covered adequately we required 1-2 events on the pages of the ladder that each group must cover. This type of ladder helps manage what we cover and how we create our book.
